The wine production at Fattoria di Petroio is carried out exclusively on the Estate.
The grapes are sourced from six hectares of specialized vineyards of which 5.5 are DOGC Chianti Classico. The remaining 6 hectars are rented out to a fellow winery, but the whole production is still done in Petroio. The Estate has been a member of the Consorzio del Chianti Classico since 1927, the year of its founding.
Eight separate vineyards are identifiable according to the year they were planted:
2008 Vigna del Viale; 1968 Vigna della Fraschetta; 1990 Vigna del Fontone; 1993 Vigna del Poggio al Mandorlo; 1996 Vigna dell’ Avvocato; 2003 Vigna Olmicino, Vigna Quercebella e Vigna Postanuova. 12 hectares are planted with Sangiovese; 0,8 with Merlot; 1.5 with Malvasia nera and Colorino; 0.3 with Canaiolo, 0.4 with Cabernet.
In 2015 a new special vineyard was planted from regenerated clones of old varietals that were found in one of the most ancient vineyards of Petroio. The new vineyard, Poggio ai Grilli, will start producing grapes and wine in 2018, allowing Petroio to diversify its production and adding three more wines to its line of products.
The vine density also varies according to the age of the vineyards. In the older vineyards there are about 3000 plants per hectare, while in the younger ones there are up to about 6000 plants per hectare. Only the best selections of the Estate’s production are bottled under the Petroio label. On an average per year about 45.000 bottles of wine are produced, of which 36,000 are Chianti Classico, 5,000 are Poggio al Mandorlo and 4,000 are Chianti Classico Riserva.
The harvest is done completely by hand by specialized workers who pick only those grapes that are suitably mature and healthy. The grapes are first collected in small baskets and then turned into plastic bins.. Each bin may hold about ........kg of grapes. When five bins have been filled they are loaded onto the tractor’s bed and taken directly to the square behind the cellar where the sorting table, de-stemmer and press await them. The staff of Fattoria di Petroio, along with the owners, personally take care of this second selection, eliminating everything that does not come up to the “golden rule” of quality wine making, which is: to make good wine only perfectly healthy, mature and intact grapes are acceptable.
